Brianne says goodbye to our last BnB in Europe from our balcony.
I found the following video which I had forgot to post. It’s our cabdriver and Naxos, Greece. He really kept his eye on the road!
Herculaneum
On the way from Positano to Rome, we stopped at the Herculaneum excavation site. It shares the same story as Pompeii with a few differences.
Both Herculaneum and Pompeii were destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D.
What makes Herculaneum more interesting is that it was buried by 60 feet of lava preserving the town better and Pompeii. While Pompeii has a larger area excavated, most of the preservation is just in the lower walls.
On the other hand in Herculaneum, built possibly around 500 BC, you find walls and wood frames and sometimes the second stories on many residences are preserved. Bed frames, art frescoes on the walls, human remains with teeth and food in stomachs, bathrooms, furniture, entire houses, business signs, wine prices on billboards, streets, wells, statues and public baths were preserved.
